Assessment is arguably the most important aspect of teaching and learning as it provides both pupils and teachers with the vital information which informs the next steps to be taken.

Assessment can be oral, written, observational, discrete, on-going…the list is long and it can be conducted by teachers and teaching assistants, the children themselves through peer assessment and, occasionally, by external examiners.

In 2026 we introduced an assessment tracking system called Insight.

The system is cloud-based and is fully customisable, with built in back-up and restore functions.

Within EYFS, it enables us to record Reception baselines and assess all 7 areas of learning, tracking progress across the year and giving us a whole year overview.

The system also allows us to track pupils in KS1 and KS2 using 3 assessment points per year. We are currently using the system to track Reading, Writing, Maths, Science and RE. We will also use it to import, display, and analyse the KS1 and KS2 SATs results, Teacher Assessments and Scaled Scores.

The reporting and analysis functions are a real strength of Insight : we can look at individual subjects, individual pupils, groups, classes, cohorts and whole keystage/school to look at our strengths and areas which need to improve or can be further improved.
