Visual artwork forms an important element in our discovery curriculum.
Art, craft and design projects aim to engage, inspire and challenge the pupils allowing the children to be given experiences leading to increased proficiency in drawing, painting, sculpture and other techniques. Pupils will learn about various artists, craft makers and designers and be able to evaluate and analyse creative works.
Our Discovery Curriculum equips our pupils with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We encourage children to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design as well as teach our pupils how art and design has shaped our history and contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Britain has a strong heritage of innovative designers, from the Industrial Revolution to the design of the iMac. Innovative designers such as Brunel, Stephenson, Ive, Baird and Berners–Lee have provided us with great footsteps in which to follow. British Values are promoted through this aspect of our Discovery Curriculum.
We make sure that children across the whole school have opportunities to cook and for them to apply their understanding of nutrition and healthy eating. This links across our Discovery Curriculum, particularly to science and PSHE learning. Our cookery club runs after school, where children makes delicious things scones, truffles and smoothies!
Every term, the Discovery Curriculum Plans for each year group reflect a change in theme and detail the outline of the knowledge, understanding and skills that will be covered.
