Hello and welcome to Blue Classes!
We are excited to welcome to children back this week; we hope everyone had restful summer breaks. Please let Miss Brown or Mr Frith know if you need to update us on anything from over the Summer break.

Wednesday mornings this term will be the children’s forest school (please see additional information below) or MFL and art sessions. However, this week, all adults from Year 4 will be there for their first morning, spending time settling the children in after their summer.

In the afternoon, we will be doing some transition activities to ensure the children get to know their new classrooms and adults a little better. We will also be looking at our text from this term: The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. We have a Kindle copy of the book to show on the board. However, if you were to have a copy at home or would like to purchase a copy for your child, it would benefit them when reading the text independently.

On Thursday, we will be kicking off our maths topic for the start of this term (place value) with some games and activities, before starting the topic on Friday. In English, we will be exploring fairytales. Our first lesson will involve our imagination, creating  and performing our own fairytales before exploring ambitious vocabulary the following day.

Our topic this term is My Local Place: Exploring the UK and our Enquiry Question is what can we discover about UK coasts? We will be completing our hook lesson this week with some outdoor challenges that should help us remember everything we already know about the UK and coasts.

We will be completing our first RSHE lesson: Gender stereotypes and aspirations. The key questions we will be covering are:
- What do I want to be when I grow-up?
- What or who might influence us to choose certain jobs?
- Can men and women do the same jobs?

On Friday afternoon, we will be doing Computing and PE. PE this term will be outdoors while the weather stays nice, but we may adapt this if needed. Presently, PE days will be Wednesday (for the class doing forest school, please see dates below) and Friday.

Forest school message:

Blue classes have Forest school every Wednesday until half term – please ensure your child is prepared!

Blue F: 9th Sept, 16th Sept, 23rd Sept, 30th Sept
Blue B: 7th Oct, 14th Oct, 21st  Oct

What you will need:
Wellies – these should be kept in school
A waterproof coat / puddlesuit / trousers.
A change of socks for afterwards (and a change of trousers if they don’t have waterproof ones!)
Cap (helps keep rain/sun off your face) or hat (you lose most of your body heat through your head!)
A NAMED plastic bag to take muddy/wet/dirty clothes home in.
Thank you!

Why do we ask for long sleeves and long trousers at Forest School?
Exposed skin is open to nettles and brambles,
there are thorns on some bushes,
long grass whips when you run through it,
bugs like to bite,
ticks like to latch on,
and in the summer the sun likes to burn!
Scratches are sore and puddles are rarely crystal clean rainwater,  splashing them onto scratches can cause infection.
Stings and bites can be annoying, or even a big deal if you have an allergy (especially wasps/bees stings).

Although seasonal, exposure to the sun is great for Vitamin D but young skin especially needs a barrier whenever it is sunny!
Ticks, however, are nasty little creatures. Once the remit of summer, climate change means they have been found in the dead of winter. Removing these is not easy, and some do carry Lyme Disease.

Finally, in wind and rain, long trousers and long sleeves do help keep you warm! BUT they will get wet! WARM DRY CLOTHES TO CHANGE INTO ARE ESSENTIAL!
