Another busy week is upon us in Year 4! We’ll be rounding numbers, investigating instructions, travelling through the human digestive system, exploring our coastlines and asking some rather big questions about human nature. And, as if that wasn’t enough… there will be ukuleles!
This Week…
In Maths, we will be finishing our Place Value unit this week by learning how to round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. We’ll be thinking carefully about which numbers are closer to one another and learning the all-important rules for rounding. Hopefully, by the end of the week, we’ll all be experts at knowing when a number needs to move up or down!
In English, we are going to be identifying and understanding the features of instructional texts. We’ll be looking at what makes a good set of instructions clear and helpful, including things like imperative verbs, clear steps and precise vocabulary.
This week in Science, we’re going to be making a model to represent the process of the human digestive system. We’ll be following the journey of food through the body and thinking about what happens at each stage. It’s going to be a fantastic opportunity to get hands-on with our learning and discover just how clever the human body really is!
In Discovery, we are moving on to human features of the coastline. We’ll be identifying different features that humans have created or changed and explaining what their purpose is. We’ll be thinking about why people have built structures along our coastlines and how these can help protect people, buildings and the coastline itself.
Our RE Learning Question this week is: “What does the story of Adam and Eve show us about human nature and how to act?”We’ll be exploring the story of Adam and Eve and thinking about some of the big ideas within it, including choices, temptation, responsibility and the consequences of our actions.
No Miss Brown This Week!
Just a little change to our usual routine…
Miss Brown will not be in school this week.
However, Blue B will be very well looked after by the lovely Mrs Frith, who will be teaching the class for the week.
We’re sure Blue B will give her a very warm Year 4 welcome!
Forest School & Art/French
There are a couple of timetable changes to make you aware of.
Blue B – Forest School
Blue B will now have Forest School on Wednesday mornings.
Please make sure children come to school with appropriate clothing and footwear for being outside. As we all know, Forest School has a remarkable ability to find the one puddle that exists within a five-mile radius!
Blue F – French & Art
Blue F will be having French and Art lessons with Madame Steward.
We’re looking forward to seeing what wonderful creative and linguistic talents emerge!
Ukuleles Are Coming to Year 4!
Now for something a little bit exciting…
Year 4 is getting musical!
On Monday afternoons, the children will be taking part in professional music tuition with a visiting music teacher and…wait for it…ukuleles!
The aim of this programme is to give the children the opportunity to develop their musical skills and understanding over a sustained period of time. They’ll be learning how to play the ukulele while also exploring other musical skills such as rhythm, composition and performance.
This is part of a wider scheme designed to promote music to young people, and the school also receives funding support from Kent Music for this provision.
A Change to PE Days…Again!
Unfortunately, because of our new Monday afternoon music sessions, we need to make another change to our PE timetable.
PE will move back to Fridays.
We apologise for yet another change to the PE days and really appreciate your patience and understanding as we make sure the children's timetable works as smoothly as possible.
So, just to make things nice and simple:
Monday – Music/Ukulele
Wednesday – Forest School for Blue B
Friday – PE
Spellings
This week, we are learning words containing the prefix ‘sub-’, meaning ‘below’ or ‘further divided’.
Our spelling words are:
submarine
subheading
subdivide
submit
subway
submerge
subtropical
subject
subtitle
substandard
There are some tricky ones in this week's list, so please encourage children to practise them regularly at home.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We’re looking forward to another fantastic, and hopefully melodious, week in Year 4!

We are excited to welcome to children back this week; we hope everyone had restful summer breaks. Please let Miss Brown or Mr Frith know if you need to update us on anything from over the Summer break.
